On Tuesday, Starlin Castro had two hits and Anthony Rizzo and Dioner Navarro had hits and as the Cubs scored two runs on 10 hits. Starting pitcher Christopher Rusin allowed six hits and four runs, lasting just 2.1 innings to take the loss. For Wednesday’s game, the Cubs start Jake Arrieta, who is 3-2 with a 3.94 ERA for the season and 1-1 with a 4.24 ERA in his last three starts.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have clinched a spot in the postseason, but they haven’t given up hopes of winning the NL Central. On Tuesday, Jordy Mercer had a home run and Starling Marte, Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez, and Marlon Byrd each had two hits as the Pirates scored eight runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Gerit Cole allowed seven hits and two runs, while striking out six over 6.0 innings to get the win. For Wednesday’s game, the Pirates start Francisco Liriano, who is 16-7 with a 2.88 ERA and 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his last three starts.
Chicago is 17-36 in their last 53 home games, 2-5 in their last seven home against a left-handed starter, and 2-9 in their last 11 games as an underdog. Pittsburgh is 7-13 as a home favorite, 2-11 in game three of a series, and 12-5 in Liriano’s last 17 starts. Pittsburgh is 5-1 in the last six meetings of these two.
