The St. Louis Cardinals and the Washington Nationals face off on Wednesday in St. Louis for game three of their series in St. Louis.
The St. Louis Cardinals continued to hold onto first place in the National League Central, as they edged the Nationals on Tuesday. Matt Carpenter, Carlos Beltran, and Yadier Molina each had hits as the Cardinals scored two runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Michael Wacha allowed just one hit and two walks over 8.2 innings to get the win and Trevor Rosenthal earned the save. For Wednesday’s game, the Cardinals start Shelby Miller, who is 14-9 with a 3.12 ERA and 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA in his last three starts.

The Washington Nationals couldn’t get the bats going on Tuesday, but were able to avoid the no-hitter. Ryan Zimmerman broke up the no-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning as he had reached base earlier on a walk and Adam LaRoche also reached on a walk. Starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez allowed six hits and two runs, while striking out six over 7.0 innings to take the loss. For Wednesday’s game, the Nationals start Jordan Zimmerman, who is 19-8 with a 3.18 ERA and 3-0 with a 2.14 ERA in his last three starts.
St. Louis is 5-1 in their last six games, 22-8 as a favorite, and 10-3 in Miller’s last 13 home starts. Washington is 6-2 following a loss, 6-3 in their last nine road games, and 4-1 in Zimmerman’s last five road starts. Washington is 0-7 in the last seven meetings of these two.
Zimmerman has been the best pitcher in the NL all season long and it is only fitting he beats a solid team and pitcher for win number 20.
