The Atlanta Braves host the Philadelphia Phillies in game one of their season-ending series.
Philadelphia has locked up fourth in the National League East thanks to a poor past few weeks. The last few weeks defines their season with the offense struggling and the pitching unable to hold up although neither unit has been at full strength most of the season. Starter Cole Hamels has been outstanding over the second half of 2013 but has not won as many ass he should have with the offense unable to score for him. That trend continued in a 3-2 loss at Miami with two runs allowed over six innings earning him a no decision while Ethan Martin lost it with a run scored in the 8th. Cesar Hernandez and Freddy Galvis slapped RBI singles but offense missed out on some chances. Tyler Cloyd looks to end a three game skid when he takes the mound versus the Braves. Cloyd has struggled the past three times out with a combined 17 runs given up over 13 innings.

The Braves didn't have a great series against visiting Milwaukee but in the scope of things it really doesn't matter. Atlanta fell to the Brew Crew 4-0 on Wednesday with dead silent performance at the plate. I do think the Bravos would like to do some damage over the final days to carry some momentum in to the first round of the postseason. No momentum to be found Wednesday with Paul Maholm giving up three runs on eight hits over seven frames while striking out eight in a solid but losing effort. The offense had no chance with a mere two hits as they couldn't solve Kyle Lohse. Rookie David Hale faces the rival Phillies in the first game of their series Thursday. Hale is hoping to duplicate his only start in a 4-3 loss (ND) where he tossed five shut out frames while striking out nine.
Hale is a huge favorite in his second career start in a game that has little meaning. Not a game that draws much interest from me but I'll back the home team...
