The Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres conclude their series today at Petco.
The Diamondbacks have experienced some up and down performances from the mound and at the plate over the past two weeks as they have played around .500 baseball. On Wednesday both units were down in a 12-2 defeat at San Diego in a game they actually had a 2-1 lead. That was before Randall Delgado imploded with six runs given up over five innings while Eury De La Rosa gave up four more in 2/3 of an inning. Delgado singled in one run and the other was plated on a balk in an other wise quiet offensive game. Trevor Cahill will be on the mound for the final game of the series at Petco. Cahill has been solid the last four times out where he has gone 3-0 with a total of five runs allowed in 22 innings.

It's been another year where San Diego has struggled at the plate and relied on the work on the mound to hold the fort and we can tell by their record how successful that has been. Having said that the Padres enjoyed one of their best offensive days of 2013in knocking off the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. They didn't really need it thanks to Ian Kennedy who allowed both runs through seven frames in defeating his former team. The bats pounded out 14 hits with plenty of power baseball mixed in with three home runs while four players combined to drive in ten runs. San Diego turns to rookie left hander Robbie Erlin to square on the bump verus the visiting Diamondbacks. Erlin would like to duplicate his last outing when he tossed 7.2 scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory over the Dodgers.
Cahill has vastly more experience then Erlin so one would think the Diamondback could get a win here. I'm going out on the limb and backing the Padres who have been a bit spunky...
