San Francisco Giants vs. San Diego Padres Free Pick 9/27/13
2013-09-27 09:15:00 EDT
The San Diego Padres head to San Francisco on Friday to begin their final three game series.
The San Francisco Giants aren’t going down quietly this season as the Giants just defeated the Dodgers last night 3-2. The Giants had Lincecum on the hill against the Giants, and Lincecum was solid, going seven complete innings, giving up just two runs off of eight hits. The Giants also only needed two arms from their bullpen on the night, so the ‘pen got some nice rest before Friday’s series with San Diego. San Francisco will have Ryan Vogelsong on the hill Friday against San Diego. Vogelsong is 3-4 lifetime against the Padres, with an ERA of 5.96 and a WHIP of 1.63. In Vogelsong’s last meeting with San Diego, the Giants starter lasted five innings, giving up six runs off of eight hits on the night.
The San Diego Padres are coming off an 11 inning win over the Diamondbacks on Thursday in San Diego. The Padres defeated the Diamondbacks 3-2, thanks to a walk off single by Amarista, scoring Medica. San Diego had Erlin on the hill against Arizona, and Erlin was very solid, lasting seven full innings, giving up just two runs off of three hits, while striking out seven. The Padres will have Burch Smith on the hill Friday against San Francisco. Smith has yet to face the Giants in his young career. Smith does have five road appearances, and two road starts to his credit this season however. On the road this year, Smith is 1-0 with an ERA of 4.73 and a WHIP of 1.35.
The Padres have been playing well in the month of September, going 15-9 this month. San Diego is also solid at night, with a record of 53-57 on the year. The Giants are also in the black this month, going 14-10 overall in September. San Francisco is right at the .500 mark in their home field this season with a record of 39-39.
I’m going to have to take the Giants in this spot. San Francisco showed us last night that they aren’t phoning in the end of their season, and at home to finish it out, in front of their home fans, I expect the Giants to play hard until the end. Also, I just don’t trust Smith for the Padres, and even though Vogelsong has been far from reliable, I still trust him more in this spot. Especially at this price.
