The Oakland Athletics head to Safeco Field to begin the final series of 2013 with the Seattle Mariners.
Oakland is the American League West champions for the second straight year because they have the best combination of hitting and pitching in the division. The lone concern for the A's might be their offense which has struggled in back to back defeats to the Angels where one run was scored. The Athletics dropped a 3-1 decision to Los Angeles with Daniel Straily allowing three runs over 6.2 innings although just one was earned. That was too much to over come with Jered Weaver on the hill with a 6th inning sacrifice fly from Jed Lowrie accounting for the scoring. A red hot Bartolo Colon takes the ball Friday against the Mariners with win number 18 within his grasp. Colon is riding a three game winning streak including consecutive shut outs with one run allowed in 22 innings.

Seattle has had little to cheer about in 2013 and the numbers say the Mariners are simply playing out the string with defeats in seven of eleven. Having said that, Kansas City is not thinking that after the M's recorded consecutive shut outs to end the Royals postseason dreams. Hisashi Iwakuma improved to 14-6 with a four hit shut out over eight innings while recording nine strike outs. The bats enjoyed a big scoring night as well with an eight hit, four walk attack seeing Mike Zunino go deep twice with Michael Saunders going solo while Kyle Seager doubled in two runs. Felix Hernandez is scheduled to be on the hill to square off with the Athletics Friday if his ailing back is a go. Hernandez looked good in a four inning stint versus the Angels with a run allowed and striking out ten.
The veteran Colon has had a magical year and can match the second highest win total of a very good career. I don't know what to expect from Hernandez who has been battling back problems but struck out ten in four innings last time out but threw 93 pitches. With not knowing I'll take the A's but will probably just watch this...
