The Texas Rangers have to have a win over the visiting Los Angeles Angels to stay in the Wild Card race.

Consecutive defeats to the Rangers have guaranteed that Los Angeles will finish 2013 with a losing record although even being in a position to reach .500 is a testament to some very strong play lately. The LAA fell short on the mound and at the plate Friday in a 5-3 defeat with CJ Wilson keeping his team alive with three runs plated over six frames before Juan Guiterrez taking the loss with two runs plated in 2/3 of an inning. The Angels offense produced eight hits and walked twice with Josh Hamilton smacking a two run single. The Angels send Garrett Richards out to the hill looking to ruin the playoff hopes of Texas. Richards has either been very good or very bad over his last ten with a 4-3 record with three no decisions.

Texas Rangers vs. Los Angeles Angels Free Pick - 9/28/13

Jim Cowsert-USA TODAY Sports

The Rangers poor play a few weeks ago might ultimately be the reason they lose the Wild Card but it won't be because of how they have performed the past week where Texas has racked up five straight wins. The team received an okay effort from Alexi Ogando who allowed three runs on eight hits and a trio of free passes through 5.1 innings of work. The bats totaled seven hits and walked six times with Alex Rios and AJ Pierzynskidriving in two runs apiece. Left hander Derek Holland toes the rubber against the Angels hoping to keep the Rangers Wild Card hopes afloat. Holland is coming in off his best performance of 2013 when he tossed a complete game shut out in a 12-0 rout of Houston.

I'll say up front that I don't have the greatest feel for this but Holland has struggled in this match up and Richards hasn't. It seems that when I back Richards he loses which is what I'm doing...
