The Miami Marlins and the Detroit Tigers close out their 2013 regular season schedules as they face off on Sunday in Miami.
It was a rebuilding year for the Miami Marlins but they battled back on Saturday to get the win in extra innings. Christian Yellich had two hits and Chris Coghlan and Giancarlo Stanton had hits as the Marlins scored two runs on five hits. Starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi allowed seven hits and a run while striking out five over 6.0 innings but it was Steve Chisek who got the win. For Sunday’s game the Marlins start Henderson Alvarez who is 4-6 with a 3.94 ERA for the season and 1-2 with a 2.37 ERA in his last three starts.

The Detroit Tigers will be playing the A’s in the first round of the ALDS in a series that starts on Friday. On Saturday Miguel Cabrera had two hits as Did Jhonny Peralta and Omar Infante each had two hits as the Tigers scored one run on nine hits. Starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez allowed two hits and struck out eight over 5.0 scoreless innings but Joaquin Benoit blew the save and Evan Reed took the loss. For Sunday’s game the Tigers start Justin Verlander who is 13-12 with a 3.56 ERA for the season and 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA in his last three starts.
Miami is 5-1 in their last six games, 6-2 in their last eight interleague games, and 2-8 in Alvarez’s last 10 starts. Detroit is 8-3 in their last 11 interleague games, 27-12 against the NL East, and 1-5 in Verlander’s last six road starts. Detroit is 1-5 in their last six games in Miami.
The Marlins are closing strong and Verlander just hasn’t been himself so worth it to take a shot with the home dog.
