The Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals face off on Thursday Night in Busch Stadium as they play game one of their 2013 NLCS.
It has been a long time since the Pittsburgh Pirates played in the post season but they didn’t seem intimidated at all taking out the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday and advancing to the NLCS. The Pirates come into this series with plenty of momentum winning their last three games and going 44-37 overall on the road this season but they haven’t had a lot of success in St. Louis losing five of their last six games there. For the season the Pirates batted .245 as a team with Marlon Byrd hitting .318 and Andrew McCutchen hitting .317 and both of them had two hits each on Tuesday but it was Russell Martin’s two home runs that stole the show. For game one of the NLCS the Pirates start A.J. Burnett who is 10-11 on the season with a 3.30 ERA and 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA in his last three starts and he has also faced the Cardinals three times in the past two months with the Pirates winning two of those games.

The St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series just two years ago and after looking like they were headed back last season the let the Giants come back on them and then go on to win it all. The Cardinals won their last six games to slam the door shut on the very competitive NL Central and they are 54-27 at home this season. As a team the Cardinals hit .269 with Yadier Molina at .319, Matt Carpenter at .318, Matt Holliday hitting .300, and Carlos Beltran hitting .296. For game one against the Pirates the Cardinals start Adam Wainwright who was 19-9 with a 2.94 ERA for the season and 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA in his last three starts.
Pittsburgh is 19-7 in their last 26 games as an underdog, 8-1 in their last nine road games, 9-4 in game one of a series, and 6-14 in Burnett’s last 20 starts. St. Louis is 6-1 in game one of a series, 6-1 following an off day, 9-4 in their last 13 Divisional Playoff home games, and 5-0 in Wainwright’s last five starts. Pittsburgh has lost four in a row in St. Louis.
While we have two pitchers with low ERA’s here, we have plenty of batters who have seen these pitchers and I look for there to be a little more hitting than some expect and my free pick here is that this game goes over the total. I also have a play on the winning side and I will post the winning team in the Premium Area.
