The Detroit Tigers kick off their ALDS with the Oakland Athletics at O.co Coliseum on Friday.
Before the season began, Detroit was labeled the favorite to emerge with another American League Central crown. That might be how things worked out but it certainly wasn't a walk in the park with Cleveland giving the Tigers a run for their money and eventually capturing the top Wild Card spot. Kansas City was also much tougher and had their best team in recent memory in what might have been the toughest division in the AL. The bottom line is Detroit still won the division behind the top hitting team in the land with a .283 BA that averaged almost five runs per game while slugging 176 bombs. The 9th ranked pitching checked in with a 3.61 ERA and were tops with 108 quality starts. Detroit opens the series with Max Scherzer on the hill who is the probable Cy Young award winner. Scherzer was tops in baseball in wins with a 21-3 record and sparkling 2.90 ERA over 214.1 innings of work.

The American League West began as a two team race between Oakland and Texas with the Angels thrown in as a dark horse which is pretty much how it was in 2012. The Athletics needed a torid run to catch the Rangers for the division title and that scenario was supposed to play out once again this year and for a while it did. Texas and Oakland went back and forth for the division lead before the A's took control with lengthy hot streak at the same time the Rangers went cold and that was the division race. Oakland only hit .254 as a team but were clutch with over 4.7 runs per game with 186 homers helping the scoring. The work on the mound was none too shabby with a 3.63 ERA ranking them 7th. Veteran Bartolo Colon looks to continue his success when he faces the dangerous Detroit offense Friday. Colon has gone 18-6 with a 2.65 ERA to match the second highest win total of his career.
Both hurlers have been outstanding and their records say as much. I might be going against the grain here but Colon as a dog isn't a bad way to go which is how I'm going right now...
