The Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals face off on Friday afternoon in St. Louis for game two of their NLDS.
The Pittsburgh Pirates looked to be ready for a battle in game one of the NLDS on Thursday but one bad inning and it was all but over. Andrew McCutchen had two hits, Pedro Alvarez hit a home run, and Justin Morneau had a hit as the Pirates scored just one run on four hits. Starting pitcher A.J. Burnett came unglued early as he allowed six hit and seven runs all without retiring a batter in the third inning to take the loss while Jeanmar Gomez allowed two runs in four innings in long relief. For Friday’s game the Pirates start Gerit Cole who is 10-7 with a 3.22 ERA for the season and 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA in his last three starts.

The St. Louis Cardinals looked very much like the more experienced team on Thursday as they took advantage of their big chance and jumped all over the Pirates early en route to the win. Carlos Beltran hit a three run home run and David Freese, Matt Holliday, and Yadier Moina each had two hits as the Cardinals banged out nine runs on 10 hits. Starting pitcher Adam Wainwright allowed three hits and a run while striking out nine over 7.0 innings to get the win while Carlos Martinez and Trevor Rosenthal each pitched an inning of relief. For Friday’s game the Cardinals start Lance Lynn who was 15-10 with a 3.97 ERA for the season and he was 2-0 with a 1.45 ERA in his last three starts.
St. Louis is 7-0 in their last seven games following a win, 5-1 in their last five home playoff wins, 20-7 in their last 27 games overall, and 2-5 in Lynn’s last seven starts in game two of a series. Pittsburg is 4-0 in their last four games following a loss, 8-3 in their last 11 road games, and 5-0 in Cole’s last five starts. Pittsburgh is 0-6 in their last six games in St. Louis.
I expect to see some scoring here as this one as both teams haven’t been off the field for much more than 12 hours so they will be right back into it so my free pick is on the over. I also have a pick on the winning team and I will post the winner in the Premium Area.
