The St Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates clash in game two of the NLDS on Friday.
I thought Pittsburgh could be a dangerous team heading in the NLDS opener against St Louis with their win over Cincinnati marking their first postseason win in over 20 years. Whatever momentum they had was gone by the time they reached Busch Stadium where the Buccos fell by a 9-1 count. The Pirates have generally be clutch at the plate and stingy on the mound but not this time around with starter AJ Burnett giving up seven runs in the third on six hits and four walks without recording an out. That was game over with the offense mustering just three hits with Pedro Alverez leaving the yard. Rookie Gerrit Cole gets the starting honors against St Louis. Cole has been a major reason the Pirates edged the Reds for home field advantage with eight consecutive quality starts while winning four in a row.

The Cardinals are a perennial playoff team and that's because they their work on the mound and at the plate always seems to be strong. That was the case in 2013 and the Redbirds needed both to be at their best with Cincinnati and Pittsburgh making strong runs at the National League Central crown. Adam Wainwright proved why he was the game one starter with the lone run given up on three hits and zero bases on balls through seven frames while striking out nine. The offense exploded for ten hits and walked six times with Carlos Beltran leading the way with a three run bomb while David Freese smacked a two run single with Matt Adams and Jon Jay score twice. St Louis gives the game two start to Lance Lynn on Friday. Lynn had been struggling but appears to have righted the ship with four quality starts in a row where he has allowed just three runs in 24.2 innings.
Cole has never faced St Louis which could work in his favor while I don't know what to expect Lynn who has been bad until lately. I'm surprised Lynn is getting the start to be honest and I'm even surprising myself by backing him but I reserve the right to change...
