The Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers face off in Detroit for game four of the 2013 ALCS with the Red Sox leading the series two games to one.
The Boston Red Sox didn’t get a ton of offense on Tuesday but they didn’t need it as strong pitching carried them in game three of the ALCS in Detroit. Mike Napoli hit a home run that accounted for all of the scoring and Jacoby Ellsbury, Jonny Gomes, and Stephen Drew had hits as the Red Sox had four hits in all. John Lackey put forth an outstanding pitching effort allowing four hits and striking out eight over 6.2 innings to get the win and Koji Uehara earned the save. For Wednesday’s game four the Red Sox start Jake Peavy who is 12-5 on the season with a 4.07 ERA and 1-0 in his last three starts with a 4.34 ERA.

The Detroit Tigers had their share of chances on Tuesday but they were unable to capitalize on any of them as they lost game three to Boston. Torii Hunter and Victor Martinez each had two hits and Prince Fielder and Jhonny Peralta had hits as the Tigers failed to score on six hits largely due to striking out 12 times. Justin Verlander allowed just four hits and run while striking out 10 over 8.0 innings to take the loss. For Wednesday’s game the Tigers start Doug Fister who is 14-9 with a 3.69 ERA for the season and 2-0 with a 4.05 ERA in his last three starts.
Boston is 5-2 in their last seven post-season games, 13-6 as a post season underdog, and 4-1 in Peavy’s last five road starts. Detroit is 5-2 in their last seven ALCS games, 2-6 in their last eight games as a favorite, and 6-2 in Fister’s last eight starts as a home favorite. Boston has won four of the last five meetings of these two.
I expect a lot more hitting and scoring in this one and I look for the starters to get hit as both teams are going to come out swinging and for my free pick I am going with the over in the first 5 innings. I have more picks on this game and I will post those picks in the Premium Area.
