The Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox face off on Monday in Opening Day American League East MLB action.
The Baltimore Orioles have gone from a team of perennial also rans to a team of contenders and they get a chance to send that message right out of the gate this season. The Orioles finished 2013 seven games over .500 but that was only good enough for a third place tie in the AL East and watching the post season from home. Chris Davis had a big first half last season and he gets help with more power in the lineup with the addition of nelson Cruz. Adam Jones is still the anchor of the O’s while Matt Wieters is one of several dependable bats more than capable of big games and a big season. Chris Tillman gets the start for Opening Day as he comes off of a solid season and the Orioles have beefed up their pitching staff picking up Ubaldo Jimenez as well. Tommy Hunter moves to the closer spot and hopes are he will have plenty of save opportunities.

The Boston Red Sox are the defending World Series Champions as they took over the role of a rallying call for the entire city of Boston after the early season explosion at the Boston marathon. The Red Sox had few expectations in 2013 but led the AL East from start to finish and when the post season stated they were simply unstoppable. David Ortiz is back as the heart and soul of the team and Dustin Pedroia is still the straw that stirs the drink. A.J. Pierzynski takes over the catcher role and Jackie Bradley Jr. will be in center field. Jon Lester is slated to be the Opening Day starter and he is coming off of a monster year. Koji Uehara is still the closer after being on the mound for the clincher in the World Series and Junichi Tazawa is in the setup role.
Baltimore is 8-3 in their last 11 games against a left-handed starter, 4-1 in their last five home games, and 4-1 against the AL East. Boston is 6-2 in game one of a series, 5-2 in their last seven road games, and 4-1 in Lester’s last five starts. Boston is 2-5 in their last seven games against the Orioles and 4-9 in their last 13 games in Baltimore.
The total is set at 8.5 but I like the under and that is my free pick here. I also have a play on who will win and I will post that pick in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
