The Baltimore Orioles look for their second straight win to open 2014 against the visiting Boston Red Sox.
The Red Sox are the odds on favorite to win the very tough AL East and possibly the World Series with their combination of hitting and pitching being tough to beat. The offense was silent in their 2-1 opening day defeat at Camden Yards but they were still in position to win thanks to a strong performance on the mound from Jon Lester. The lefty gave up two runs on six hits and struck out eight with his only bad pitch landing in the left field bleachers courtesy of Nelson Cruz. The bats produced some chance on nine hits and a trio of base on balls but never broke through with Grady Sizemore's solo jack in the 4th accounting for the offense. Veteran John Lackey gets Wednesday start looking to build on last year's campaign where he was only 10-13 but did post a solid 3.52 ERA.

Baltimore wasn't really the challenger in the American League East many predicted in 2013 as things just didn't click often enough after the All Star break. Beating favorite Boston would be a nice way to build confidence going forward and it was mission accomplished for one day as the Orioles opened 2014 with a 2-1 decision over their rivals. Chris Tillman held Boston to a run on seven hits over five innings with four relievers throwing shutout baseball. The dangerous Baltimore offense posted just six hits and walked once but newcomer Nelson Cruz blasted a 7th inning homer to break a 1-1 tie and give his new team the win. Ubaldo Jimenez makes his first start in a Baltimore uniform after coming over from Cleveland where he was 13-9 with a 3.30 ERA in 2013.
Complete toss up here with Lackey having good success against Baltimore while Jimenez was lights out to end 2013. I'm an Orioles fan and think Boston has a slight edge but going with the Birds for now...
