The Kansas City Royals look to even their record when the take the field at Comerica Park to face the Detroit Tigers.
Game one of 2014 was a difficult one to swallow if you are a Kansas City fan as they had Justin Verlander on the ropes with a 3-1 before the relief corp gave it up in a 4-3 defeat. James Shields threw well enough to win with three runs allowed on five hits through 6.1 innings but received a no decision when Aaron Crowe came on and let two inherited runners score in 2/3 of an inning. Wade Davis took the loss when Alex Gonzalez laced an RBI hit in the bottom of the 9th. The Royals mustered seven hits and three walks with Salvador Perez going 4-4 with an RBI while Omar Infante and Lorenzo Cain drove in runs. Lefty Jason Vargas makes his KC debut after going 9-8 with a 4.02 ERA for the Angels last year.

Defending American League Central champion always seems to have problems with Kansas City so opening the season with the Royals was probably not the best scenario. Having said that, the Tigers had Justin Verlander going and I would take my chances with him on the mound against anybody. Verlander picked up a no decision with all three KC runs scored through six frames on six hitsand a trio of BB although just two runs were earned. Three relievers tossed scoreless frames with Joe Nathan getting the win. The Tigers generated eight hits with Victor Martinex going solo and Alex Gonzalez rapping an RBI triple and run scoring single in the 9th to win it. Max Scherzer looks to pick up where he left off sfter going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 2013.
Vargas is tough when on top of his game and Scherzer and his brilliant 2013 speaks for itself. If Scherzer is close to his form from a year ago I like them but we don't know what anybody has right now...
