The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals will begin a three-game series on Friday night. The Pirates are coming off a 2-1 series win over the Chicago Cubs, while the Cardinals took two of three against the Cincinnati Reds.
The Cardinals stay on the road for another three-game series and are just hoping the bats can wake up. The Cards scored seven runs on Thursday, but were held to just one run in their first two games. The Cardinals .129 team batting average was dead last in the majors heading into Thursday night. Pitching wise, Shelby Miller will make his 33rd career start for the Cardinals after finishing last season with 15-9 record and a 3.06 ERA. Miller was a ridiculous 10-3 at home last season with an ERA of 1.75, but only 5-6 with a 4.57 ERA on the road.
USA TODAY Sports
The Pirates are looking a lot like the team they were last season, great pitching and very little offense. The Pirates have scored only seven runs and racked up 20 hits in their first three games. However, the Pirates pitching has been terrific, allowing just six runs in the Cubs series. Youngster Gerrit Cole will get the start in game 1 for the Pirates. Cole finished last season 10-7 with an ERA of 3.22.
The Cardinals are 5-1 in their last 6 during game 1 of a series and 5-0 in Millers last 5 starts. The Pirates are 6-1 in Coles last 7 starts and 4-1 in their last 5 games as a favorite. The Cardinals are 7-2 in the last 9 meetings vs. the Pirates, but just 0-4 in Millers last 4 starts vs. Pirates.
With both offenses struggling out of the gate, I like the under in this matchup. Not to mention the under is 3-0-1 in Cardinals last 4 road games and 3-0-1 in Pirates last 4 home games.
