The Miami Marlins and the San Diego Padres wrap up their weekend series on Sunday in Miami.
Not much was expected of the Miami Marlins this season but with almost a week gone in the season the Marlins have lost just once. On Saturday Giancarlo Stanton, Chistian Yelich, Casey McGehee, and Derek Dietrich each had two hits as the Marlins scored five runs on 10 hits. Jose Fernandez was impressive once again allowing three hits and striking out eight over 6.2 innings to get the win and go to 2-0 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Marlins start Nathan Eovaldi who won his first time out this year. In his first outing Eovaldi allowed six hits and two runs while striking out six over 6.0 innings to beat the Rockies. The Marlins have a nice young core of players it is just a matter of how long they can keep it together this season.

The San Diego Padres are already struggling this season as they look to avoid the sweep of the weekend series on Sunday in Miami. On Saturday Everth Cabrera had two hits and Chase Headley, Yonder Alonso, and Nick Hundley had hits as the Padres scored no runs on five hits as they had no answers at the plate for Fernandez. Starting pitcher Andrew Cashner allowed five hits and two runs while striking out six over 6.0 innings of work to take the loss. For Sunday’s game the Padres start Ian Kennedy who lost in his first start. In his first outing this year Kennedy allowed five hits and three runs while striking out four over 5.0 innings to lose to the Dodgers. It’s clear the Padres have some holes it is just a matter of filling them in a hurry.
Miami is 9-1 in their last 10 games, 5-1 against the NL West, 17-39 in game three of a series, and 4-0 in Eovaldi’s last four starts. San Diego is 3-7 in their last 10 starts as an underdog, 1-5 in their last six road games, 1-5 in their last six games, and 4-1 in Kennedy’s last five starts in game three of a series. San Diego has lost their last five games against Miami.
The Marlins look focused and impressive so far and I look for it to continue here.
