The Line: Boston Red Sox -154 / Texas Rangers +144 --- Over/Under: 9 See the Latest Odds

The Boston Red Sox and the Texas Rangers face off on Monday in Boston for game one of their series.

The Boston Red Sox were swept at home over the weekend by the Brewers and in the highly competitive American League East they know they can’t afford to fall too far behind the leaders. The Red Sox have lost three games in a row and they have been outscored by five runs as the are 1.5 games off the pace in the AL East. Xander Bogarts is leading Boston in hitting at .381, Dustin Pedroia is hitting .357, David Ortiz is hitting .318, and Mike Napoli is sporting a .261 batting average. For game one against the Rangers the Red Sox start John Lackey who had a win in his first start this season. In his first outing Lackey allowed three hits and two runs while striking out six over 6.0 innings at Camden Yards against the Orioles. The Red Sox celebrated last year’s World Series win on Friday before their game and haven’t had reason to celebrate since.

Boston Red Sox vs. Texas Rangers MLB Pick, Odds, Prediction 4/7/14

The Texas Rangers have had some struggles in the early going but they enter this series at 3-3. The Rangers are coming off of a win in Sunday and they are a game behind the Seattle Mariners in the AL West. Alex Rios leads Texas in hitting at .348, Elvis Andrus is hitting .333, Shin-Soo Choo is hitting .273, and Leonys Martin is hitting .273. For game one in Boston the Rangers start Tanner Scheppers who had a no decision though he was roughed up in his first start. In his first outing Scheppers allowed eight hits and seven earned runs while striking out two lasting just 4.0 innings at home against the Phillies. The Rangers missed the post season last year and will need Prince Fielder to start hitting if they hope to get back.

Boston is 39-16 as a home favorite, 40-19 in their last 59 home games, 43-21 against a team with a losing record, and 4-1 in Lackey’s last five starts. Texas is 7-1 against a right-handed starter, 10-4 in their last 14 games, 2-4 against the AL East, and 1-5 in their last six games as an underdog. Texas is 6-2 in the last eight meetings of these two and they are 11-5 in their last 16 games in Boston.

The Rangers are playing better right now but the Red Sox have the edge on the mound and I give them the nod here.
