The Kansas City Royals and the Tampa Bay Rays face off on Monday in an American League MLB matchup.
The Kansas City Royals won their first two games after being swept in Detroit to start the season but they fell to the White Sox ion Sunday when they couldn’t hit Chris Sale. The Royals have only been outscored by three runs overall and they are two games behind the Tigers in the AL Central. Salvador Perez is hitting .438 to lead KC, Omar Infante and Lorenzo Cain are hitting .333, and Eric Hosmer is hitting .278. For Monday’s game the Royals start Jason Vargas who had a no decision in his first start this year. In his first outing Vargas allowed five hits and a run while striking out six over 7.0 innings of work against the Tigers in Detroit. The Royals finished strong last season and the expectations are high this year.

The Tampa Bay Rays took a loss on Sunday to the Rangers but at the end of the first week of the season they lead the AL East. The Rays have outscored their opponents by 12 runs and they have a half of a game lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East. Matt Joyce leads Tampa Bay in hitting at .412, Evan Longoria is hitting .360, Ryan Hanigan is hitting .357, and Desmond Jennings is hitting .308. For game one in Kansas City the Rays start Matt Moore who took the loss in his first outing this season. Moore allowed six hits and two runs while striking out four and walking three over 5.2 innings of work against the Blue Jays. The Rays look like they are going to be contenders once again this season.
Kansas City is 5-2 in their last seven home games, 4-1 as an underdog, 8-3 against the AL East, and 8-1 against a left handed starter. Tampa Bay is 12-2 against the AL Central, 15-8 in their last 23 games, 3-9 against a left-handed starter, and 23-8 in Moore’s last 31 starts. The Rays are 1-6 in the last seven meetings against Kansas City.
