The Minnesota Twins and Oakland Athletics resume their series at Target Field Wednesday.
Oakland might be the team to beat in the American League West but it's too early to declare that to be a fact. The Athletics showed their potential in an 8-3 decision at Minnesota on Wednesday where both the arms and bats were on the same page. Scoot Kazmir took care of a dangerous Twins offense with all three runs scored on six hits and four walks over six frames to improve to 2-0. An eight hit, three walk attack saw Derek Norris go deep with Brandon Moss and Yoenis Cespedes driving in two runs each. Oakland sends Jesse Chavez to the bump for his second start of 2014 and just his 4th of his career. Chavez was strong the first time out with two runs allowed two runs (one earned) in six innings of a 3-2 victory (ND) over Seattle.

I don't know where Minnesota fits in the American League Central but if they are to make some noise I think it will be because of their bats who have hit the ball well so far. On the flip side the work on the mound has struggled although both units had their problems Monday which is not a good thing versus Oakland. Starter Kevin Correia was charged with six runs on on nine hits and a pair of free passes in 5.2 innings of work with Samuel Deduno giving up two runs in 3.1 frames. The bats put runners on base on six hits and seven walks with Jason Kubel, Kurt Suzuki and Aaron Hicks driving in runs. Phil Hughes makes his second start with Minnesota since coming over from the Yankees. Hughes struggled the first time out with four runs plated on seven hits including two homers over five frames of a 10-9 (ND) win at the White Sox.
I really need to see more of Chavez but I have seen plenty of Hughes who can be all over the map. I'll just go with the better team with no real angle...
