The New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles face off on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium as they close out and play the rubber match of their three game series in the Bronx.
The New York Yankees won their home opener on Monday against the O’s but on Tuesday they were beaten up early and often as they were clubbed taking the loss. On Tuesday Alfonso Soriano had tow hits including a home run, Kelly Johnson had a home run, Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits, and Yangervis Solarte had two hits as the Yankees scored five runs on 13 hits. Starting pitcher Ivan Nova allowed 10 hits and seven earned seven runs while three lasting just 3.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 1-1 for the season. For Wednesday’s series ender the Yankees start Masahio Tanaka who earned a win in his first start of the season. In his first Major League start Tanaka allowed six hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out eight over 7.0 innings of work at Toronto.

The Baltimore Orioles were frustrated in their loss on Monday but they got it all out of their system on Tuesday jumping all over the Yankees. Delmon Young had three hits including a home run, Adam Jones and Matt Wieters hit home runs, and Steve Lombardozzi and Ryan Flaherty each had three hits as Baltimore scored 14 runs on 20 hits. Wei-Yin Chen was given a big cushion and he took advantage allowing nine hits and four runs while striking out three over 5.0 innings of work to earn the win and go to 1-1 on the season. For Wednesday’s game the Orioles start Miguel Gonzalez who was hit hard taking a loss in his first start this season. In his first outing Gonzalez allowed nine hits and seven runs while striking out one lasting just 3.1 innings at Detroit.
New York is 6-3 as a favorite, 20-8 in their last 28 games as a home favorite, 11-5 at home against a right-handed starter, and 1-5 in their last six home games. Baltimore is 4-8 against a team with a winning record, 2-5 in their last seven games, 2-8 in their last 10 road games, and 1-4 in Gonzalez’s last five road starts. Baltimore is 1-4 in their last five games against the Yankees.
The Yankees are a big favorite here and it with being the Orioles first time facing Tanaka they may have their work cut out for them so my play is the Yankees.
