The Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs look to finish off their weekday series with a win.
Pittsburgh appears to have another team capable of challenging in the National League Central although not in Wednesday's 7-5 loss at Wrigley Field. The Pirates struggled in most areas with the arms having issues in the middle of the game and the bats dpoing nothing until late. Starter Wandy Rodriguez was charged with four runs on nine hits in five innings followed by Jeanmar Gomez who was charged with three runs in two frames. The issue with the offense was their five homeruns were all solo. The Pirates give the ball to Gerrit Cole who shoots for his second victory of the young season. Cole held a dangerous Cardinals lineup to a pair of runs on six hits over seven innings of a 12-2 rout.

The Cubs have probably been a little stronger on the mound then at the plate in recent years so when the offense puts some runs on the scoreboard the game has to go in the win column. That doesn't always happen but did Wednesday thanks to Jason Hammel giving up three solo shots through seven innings pitched. Pedro Strop survived a shaky 9th with two more solo bombs that made things uncomfortable for the Chicago faithful. The Cubs offense had just too much going offensively on 14 hits and four free passes that saw Mike Olt and Junior Lake leave the yard and combine for five RBI's. Travis Wood toes the rubber for the second time hoping for a few runs and better work out of the pen then he received in a 7-2 loss to Philadelphia. Wood was charged with four runs (three earned) on six hits in 6.1 frames.
I know Travis Wood can shut down anybody when at the top of his game but Cole and the Pirates are the more rounded squad at a decent price...
