The Cincinnati Reds and the Tampa Bay Rays face off on Friday at Great American Ballpark as they meet for game one of their interleague series.
The Cincinnati Reds have struggled so far this season with an ailing bullpen and a lineup that just hasn’t produced runs. The Reds 1-2 at home this season, 3.5 games back in the NL Central, and they are coming off of a win in Wednesday in St. Louis. As a team Cincinnati is hitting .234 with Brayan Pena hitting .353, Chris Heisey is hitting .333, and Ryan Ludwick is hitting .320. The Reds pitching staff has an ERA of 3.62 with the starters at 3.05 and the bullpen at 5.14. For game one of the series the Reds start Johnny Cueto who is still looking for his first win this year. So far this season Cueto has allowed eight hits and three runs while striking out 17 over 14 innings for a 0-1 record and a 1.93 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
The Tampa Bay Rays are tied for first place in the AL East and while none of the teams in the division have performed well the Rays have been good enough so far. The Rays are 1-2 on the road, they are coming off of a loss, and they have a half game lead over the Red Sox and Orioles. As a team the Rays are hitting .237 with Mat Joyce hitting .391, Evan Longoria hitting .371, and Ben Zobrist hitting .278. The Tampa Bay pitching staff has an ERA of 2.97 with the starters at 3.34 and the bullpen at 2.20. For game one of the series the Rays start David Price who is 1-0 this season. For the season Price has allowed 15 hits and six runs while striking out 12 over 13.1 innings for a 4.05 ERA.
Cincinnati is 5-0 in their last five interleague games, 0-7 in their last seven games as a favorite, and 2-5 in Cueto’s last seven starts. Tampa Bay is 10-2 against a right-handed starter, 9-4 following a loss, and 5-1 in Price’s last six starts. Tampa Bay is 1-8 in the last nine meetings of these two.
The Reds are a mild favorite here but I see it being tight and Reds bullpen issues still being their problem.
