The Washington Nationals and the St. Louis Cardinals face off on Friday for game two of their series in Washington.

The Washington Nationals hope to be one of the contenders in the National League but they will need to be better than they were on Thursday. Adam LaRoche and Ian Desmond each had hits as the Nationals were shut out on two hits. Starting pitcher Taylor Jordan allowed seven hits and seven runs, five earned, while striking out four over 5.1 innings to fall to 0-2 on the season. For Friday’s game the Nationals start Gio Gonzalez who lost his last start. For the season Gonzalez has allowed 15 hits and seven earned runs while striking out 17 over 18 innings for a 2-1 record and 3.50 ERA.

Washington Nationals vs. St. Louis Cardinals MLB Pick, Odds, Prediction 4/18/14

The St. Louis Cardinals are in second place in the NL Central but they made a statement on Thursday that they are going to be a factor in the National league this season. Matt Carpenter, Kolten Wong, Matt Holliday, and Jhonny Peralta each had hits as the Cardinals scored eight runs on 14 hits. Starting pitcher Adam Wainwright was at his best allowing just two hits and striking out eight pitching a complete game shutout. For Friday’s game the Cardinals start Michael Wacha who has won his last two starts. For the season Wacha has allowed 15 hits and four runs while striking out 18 over 19 innings for a 2-0 record and a 1.89 ERA.

Washington is 5-1 as a home underdog, 14-6 in game two of a series, and 7-3 in Gonzalez’s last 10 starts. St. Louis is 5-1 in their last six games, 35-16 as a favorite, and 7-2 in Wacha’s last nine starts. St. Louis has won the last eight meetings of these two.

This one is virtually a pick’em and while this isn’t a game I will be playing I like Gonzalez as a mild dog at home.
