The Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds face off on Saturday at Wrigley Field for game two of their series.
The Chicago Cubs have had a rough start to the season and it didn’t get any better for them on Friday. Anthony Rizzo had two hits and Emilio Bonifacio and Starlin Castro each had hits as the Cubs scored just once on six hits. Starting pitcher Jeff Samardzjia allowed six hits and three runs while striking out seven over 7.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 0-2 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Cubs start Edwin Jackson who is still looking for his first win of the year. For the season Jackson has allowed 19 hits and 11 earned runs while striking out 14 over 16 innings for a 0-1 record and a 6.19 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
The Cincinnati Reds have had their share of struggles this season as well but they showed no signs of them on Friday. Ryan Ludwick had two hits and Billy Hamilton, Jay Bruce, and Brandon Phillips each had hits as the Reds scored four runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Alfredo Simon was plenty good allowing four hits and a run while striking out three over 6.0 innings to get the win and go to 201 for the season while Jonathan Broxton earned his second save. For Saturday’s game the Reds start Tony Cingrani who is coming off of his first win of the year. For the season Cingrani has allowed 10 hits and five earned runs while striking out 20 over 17.1 innings of work for a 1-1 record and a 2.60 ERA.
Chicago is 20-42 in their last 62 home games, 18-44 in their last 62 games, and 3-13 in Jackson’s last 16 starts. Cincinnati is 4-1 in their last five games, 2-5 on the road against a right-handed starter, and 7-3 in Cingrani’s last 10 starts against the NL Central. Cincinnati is 21-6 in their last 27 games in Chicago.
We have seen Jackson pitch big games and I believe he does it here while Cingrani has pitched well all along so my free pick here is the under.
I also have a play on the winning side and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
