The San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres will square off Saturday night for game two. The Padres won the first game, 2-1.
The Giants have lost back-to-back games by the exact same score, but it certainly isn’t due to a lack of pitching. The Giants have allowed no more than two runs in five of their last six games, but have scored just four combined runs in their last three games. The Giants have eight players with double-digit strikeouts. One Giants pitcher who has been great has been Tim Hudson, who is 2-0 on the season with a 2.35 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 23 innings of work. Hudson is 6-1 with an ERA of 2.80 in 12 career starts against the Padres.

The Padres have won four of their last six games and are also getting great results from their pitching staff. The Padres have allowed no more than three runs in five of their last six games and are fourth in the MLB in team ERA. The problem is, much like the Giants, the Padres aren’t scoring much, as Everth Cabrera is the only player with more than 15 hits. The Padres will need to score if Eric Stults continues to pitch the way he has, as he’s 0-2 on the season with a 5.52 ERA, and he’s allowed 21 hits and 11 runs in 14.2 innings. Stults is 6-4 with a 5.21 ERA in 15 career starts against the Giants.
The Giants are 17-8 in their last 25 vs. National League West and 6-2 in their last 8 road games vs. a left-handed starter. The Padres are 7-3 in Stults' last 10 home starts vs. a team with a winning record and 2-9 in Stults' last 11 starts vs. a team with a winning record.
As long as the Giants and Hudson continue to pitch lights out, it’s tough to go against them, especially at this price. The Padres have also been pitching well, but Stults has been hard to trust.
Overall, Hudson is the much better pitcher in this matchup and the line is too good to pass up.
