The San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants face off on Sunday as they close out the NL West series.
The San Diego Padres didn’t score a lot of runs so far this series but the few they have socred have been good enough to get wins. On Saturday Everth Cabrera, Will Venable, and Seth Smith each had two hits as the Padres scored three runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Eric Stults allowed three hits and a run while striking out two over 6.0 innings to get the win and go to 1-2 for the season and Joaquin Benoit earned the save. For Sunday’s game the Padres start Robbie Erlin who is coming off of a loss in his last outing. For the season Erlin has allowed 10 hits and four earned runs while striking out 14 over 11.1 innings for a 1-1 record and a 3.18 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
The San Francisco Giants have been lacking offense so far this series and they lost once again to the Padres on Saturday. Michael Morse hit a home run and Brandon Belt and Joaquin Arias each had hits as the Giants scored one run on four hits. Starting pitcher Tim Hudson allowed eight hits and two runs while striking out four over 7.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 2-1 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Giants start Tim Lincecum who is still looking for his first win of the season though he pitched well in his last outing. For the season Lincecum has allowed 20 hits and 12 runs while striking out 17 over 15 innings for a 0-1 record and a 7.20 ERA.
San Diego is 4-0 in game three of a series, 11-5 as a favorite, and 5-2 in Erlin’s last seven starts. San Francisco is 6-2 on the road against a left-handed starter, 8-3 in game three of a series, and 8-2 in Lincecum’s last 10 starts. San Francisco is 1-5 in their last six games in San Diego.
While Lincecum isn’t the same pitcher we knew a few years ago he still has shown signs he still has it and I like for him to have plenty here.
