The Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles face off on Monday with an early start in the traditional Boston Marathon day game.
The Boston Red Sox hope their momentum carries over as they came back and got the win on Sunday night against the Orioles. Jonny Gomes had two hits including a home run and Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz had two hits each as the red Sox scored six runs on right hits. Stating pitcher Jake Peavy didn’t get a decision as he allowed 10 hits and five runs while striking out five over 5.2 innings to not factor in the decision as Edward Mujica got the win. For Monday’s game the Red Sox start Clay Buchholz who is still looking for his first win this season. For the year Buccholz has allowed26 hits and 10 runs while striking out 15 over 16.1 innings for a 0-1 record and a 5.51 ERA.
The Baltimore Orioles looked to be inline for a win on Sunday but they let it get away and ended uo taking the loss. Nelson Cruz had two hits including a home run, Adam Jones had four hits, and Matt Wieters and Ryan Flaherty each had two hits as the Orioles scored five runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez allowed four hits and three runs while striking out five but didn’t factor in the decision as Evan Meek blew the save and Brian Matusz took the loss. Baltimore looks to put Sunday behind them as they start Wei-Yin Chen who has won his last two starts. For the season Chen has allowed 26 hits and nine earned runs while striking out 12 over 17 innings for a 2-1 record and a 4.76 ERA.
Boston is 43-18 as a home favorite, 44-21 in their last 65 home games, and 20-7 in Buchholz’s last 27 home starts. Baltimore is 4-2 as an underdog, 4-10 in their last 14 road games, and 5-1 in Chen’s last six starts as an underdog. Baltimore is 15-8 in their last 23 games in Boston.
There are a lot of factors and emotion going on here as the Orioles will be looking to bounce back while with it being Boston Marathon Day, it takes on a whole new meaning to the Red Sox and the Boston Community after last year’s tragedy and it will be an emotional day all over the country and more specifically in Boston. At the end of the day it is the game and Buchholz just hasn’t looked right while Chen is rounding into form and I will take Baltimore at the nice price.
