The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees close out their three game series by playing the rubber match on Thursday in Fenway Park.
The Boston Red Sox still haven’t found their best gear yet this season but they got a win on Wednesday against the first place Yankees. Mike Napoli had three hits, Dustin Pedroia had two hits, and David Ortiz and Grady Sizemore had hits as the Red Sox scored five runs on 10 hits. Starting pitcher John Lackey allowed seven hits and a run while striking out 11 over 8.0 innings. For Thursday’s game the Red Sox start Felix Doubront who has two losses and a no decision in his last three starts. For the season Doubront has allowed 24 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out 15 over 21.1 innings for a 1-2 record and a 5.48 ERA.

The New York Yankees are in first place in the American League East but they didn’t get what they needed on Wednesday losing at Fenway Park. Carlos Beltran and Brian Roberts each had two hits and Alfonso Soriano had a hit as the Red Sox scored one run on eight hits. Starting pitcher Michael Pineda allowed four hits and two runs over 1.2 innings as he was ejected for a foreign substance but he took the loss to fall to 2-2 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Yankees start C.C. Sabathia who has won two of his last three starts. For the season Sabathia has allowed 28 hits and 15 eanred runs while striking out 27 over 26 innings for a 2-2 record and a 5.19 ERA.
Boston is 3-5 against the AL East, 17-5 against a left-handed starter, and 4-1 in Doubront’s last five home starts as a favorite. New York is 7-3 in their last 10 games, 5-1 against a left-handed starter, and 3-7 in Sabathia’s last 10 road starts. New York is 402 in their last six meetings against Boston.
