The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals will begin a three-game series on Friday, a series in which both teams could use a victory.
The Pirates have lost eight of their last 10 games, including three in a row to the Cincinnati Reds. We knew the Pirates offense would struggle to score runs and that’s been the case for much of the season. However, the Pirates pitching staff has allowed four or more runs in nine of their last 12 games. This poor combination has helped the Pirates become one of the most disappointing teams in baseball right now. Gerrit Cole will get the start on Friday, and he’s 2-1 this season with a 3.67 ERA and has 22 strikeouts in 27 innings. Cole gave up six hits and two runs in seven innings in his only career start against the Cardinals.

The Cardinals were hot early on, but have now lost six of their last nine games and are one loss away from being a .500 ball club. The lack of offense has been a problem for the Cardinals as well, as they’ve been held to two or less runs in six of their last nine games. Yadier Molina and Matt Holiday are the only Cardinals with double-digit RBI. Shelby Miller will start for the Cardinals, and he’s 1-2 with a 5.57 ERA and has 21 strikeouts 22.2 innings of work. Miller is 0-5 with a 5.93 ERA in five career starts against the Pirates.
The Pirates are 4-1 in Cole's last 5 starts as an underdog and 6-1 in their last 7 during game 1 of a series. The Cardinals are 6-1 in Miller's last 7 starts as a favorite and 10-4 in Miller's last 14 starts during game 1 of a series. The Pirates are 1-6 in the last 7 meetings in St. Louis.
Yes, the Pirates haven’t had much recent success in St. Louis. But Miller hasn’t had any success pitching against the Pirates. Both teams are struggling and this game could certainly go either way.
With that being the case, I’m always going to take my chances with the team giving me plus money.
