The San Diego Padres and the Washington Nationals square off in game number three of their series.
I don't know what the future holds for San Diego in 2014 but I'm sure the National League West title won't be part of it unless their struggling offense discovers some consistency. That means the work on the mound has to shoulder the load and avoid the meltdown we saw in Friday's 11-1 defeat at Washington. Starter Robbie Erlin was smacked around to the tune of eight runs on 13 hits in 5.1 frames which was certain defeat for a run impaired attack. The bats produced ten hits but struck out 13 times Nick Hundley rapping a run scoring single. San Diego hands the ball to Andrew Cashner to get the Padres their first win against Washington. Cashner hopes to bounce back from a 4-3 loss to Milwaukee in which he allowed all four runs in six frames.

I am having a hard time figuring out which Washington squad will show up on a daily basis. The bottom line is the Nationals are inconsistent and don't look like the team that won the National League East although the talent base is much the same. We saw a glimpse of the Nats potential Friday where both the arms and the bats were on the same page. Stephen Strasburg was at his very best with a seven hit shutout over seven frames while striking out eleven. The attack rocked San Diego pitching for 17 hits with Bryce Harper leading the way with four RBI's while Jose Lobaton, Anthony Rendon and Ian Desmond knocking in two apiece. The Nationals give Tanner Roark Saturday's start versus visiting San Diego. Roark has posted quality starts in three of his four appearances but he has yet to earn a decision with the pen and bats unable to produce.
The two questions that I have is will San Diego score and will Washington put everything together once again. I have no idea so I'll take a shot with Cashner who is the Padres best...
