The Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers face off on Sunday at Target Field for game three of their AL Central series.
After losing on Friday the Minnesota Twins bounced back on Saturday beating the Tigers. Josmil Pinto hit a home run and Trevor Plouffe and Sam Fuld had hits as the Twins scored five runs on just four hits. Starting pitcher Phil Hughes allowed four hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out six over 7.0 innings to get the win to go to 2-1 for the season and Glen Perkins earned his sixth save. For Sunday’s game the Twins start Kyle Gibson who is coming off of his worst outing of the season in a loss to the Rays. For the season Gibson has allowed 22 hits and nine earned runs while striking out 13 over 22.1 innings for a 3-1 record and a 3.63 ERA.

The Detroit Tigers don’t look the team that ran away with the AL Central the past two years as they lost against the Twins and watched their lead in the division shrink to one game. Victor Martinez hit a home run, Torii Hunter had three hits, and Austin Jackson had two hits as the Tigers scored three runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez left after 2.2 innings and it was Jose Ortega who took the loss.For Sunday’s game the Tigers start Justin Verlander who has been razor sharp in his last three starts. For the season Verlander has allowed 33 hits and eight runs while striking out 27 over 33 innings for a 3-1 record and a 2.18 ERA.
Minnesota is 17-36 in their last 53 home games, 10-19 against the AL Central, and 4-1 in Gibson’s last five starts as an underdog. Detroit is 8-4 against the AL Central, 1-5 in game three of a series, and 2-5 in Verlander’s last seven road starts. Detroit is 21-9 in their last 30 games in Minnesota.
