The Arizona Diamondbacks travel to Petco Park where they face the San Diego Padres for the first time in 2014.

I am surprised by the Diamondbacks slow start as I expected this team to at least be a factor in the National League West but with a 9-22 record they have put themselves in a very tough spot. The Snakes did end a four game slide with some late magic in a 5-4 ten inning victory over visiting Colorado. Josh Collmenter gave up four ealy runs before settling down to go seven innings. The bats rallied the team from a 4-0 hole with two runs in the 9th to tie it before winning it in the next inning. Martin Prado paced the attack with a pair of RBI's with Paul Goldschmidt and Miguel Montero leaving the yard. Bronson Arroyo gets the ball in the series opener at San Diego on Friday night. Arroyo comes in off a strong performance verus Philadelphia in which he gave two runs over 5.1 innings but did not get a decision.

I think it would be a stretch to expect San Diego to be among the top teams in the National League West mostly because runs are always at a premium and their record says the work on the mound isn't enough to win on their own. A lack of production at the plate cost the Padres in Wednesday's 3-2 defeat at San Francisco. Robbie Erlin threw the ball well with all three runs plated on eight hits in 6.2 frames but all he had to show for his efforts was a loss. SD mustered only five hits with Yasmani Grandal connecting on a solo jack but seldom threatened overall. Andrew Cashner toes the rubber on Friday as he looks to rebound from back to back poor starts. Cashner has allowed a combined eight runs on 16 hits and three free passes in 12 innings of work.

The danger in backing either team is praying for runs from somewhere. I don't enjoy backing teams that struggle at the plate and probably will look elsewhere but for a pick I'll take Cashner and keep an eye on the total because I won't pay the price...
