The Kansas City Royals and the Detroit Tigers face off on Saturday in Detroit for game two of their AL Central series.
The Kansas City Royals were hoping to close the gap o the Tigers in the AL Central on Friday but instead the lead got a game bigger. Billy Butler had a home run, Omar Infante had two hits, and Mike Moustakas had a hit as the Royals scored two runs on four hits. Starting pitcher James Shields didn’t have his best stuff as he allowed 12 hits and eight runs, seven earned, while striking out three over 6.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 3-3 fro the season. For Saturday’s game the Royals start Danny Duffy who has worked out of the bullpen thus far this season. For the season Duffy has allowed five hits and two runs while striking out 11 over 8.1 innings for a 1-1 record and a 2.16 ERA.

The Detroit Tigers fell behind early on Friday but they battled back to win going away. Alex Avila hit a home run, Vicotr martines had three hits, and Ian Kinsler, Torii Hunter, and J.D. Martinez each had two hits as the Tigers scored eight runs on 14 hits. Starting pitcher Rick Porcello allowed four hits and two runs while striking out six over 7.0 innings to get the win and go to 4-1 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Tigers start Drew Smyly who had a no decision in his last start. For the season Smyly has allowed 14 hits and six runs whole striking out 15 over 15 innings for a 1-1 record and 3.60 ERA.
Kansas City is 8-4 as a home favorite, 19-10 in their last 29 home games, and 5-0 in Duffy’s last five starts. Detroit is 6-1 in their last seven games, 5-1 in their last six road games, and 0-4 in Smyly’s last four starts. Detroit has won the last five meetings of these two.
Smyly simply hasn’t been good enough and Iook for the Royals to avenge Friday’s loss.
