The Detroit Tigers shoot for another victory at Kauffman Stadium versus the Kansa City Royals.
Surging Detroit is racking up the wins and their reward is the top spot in the American League Central. The Tigers defeated the Royals 9-2 on Saturday for their 8th win in eleven contests with both the arms and bats contributing to the success. Both were at their best Saturday with starter Drew Smyly tossing a two hit shutout over seven frames with six strikeouts. The bats pounded out 12 hits and walked six times that saw Torii Hunter slam a three run homer while Nick Castellanos drove in three more. Justin Verlander will be on the bump looking to continue his strong work on the mound versus Kansas City. Verlander has kicked off 2014 with a 3-1 mark with a 2.48 ERA in 40 innings.

Kansas City looks like the only team in the AL Cenral that can give Detroit a run for their money in the division race although not in this series right now. The Royals fell for the third straight time on Saturday with neither the pitching or hitting getting the job done. Danny Duffy gave up a run on two hits and four free passes in four innings with Louis Coleman giving up two before Aaron Brooks was tagged for six in the 9th to put this one out of reach. The offense was silent until Billy Butler and Alex Gordon busted up the shutout with 9th inning RBI's. Lefty Jason Vargas toes the rubber Sunday against the dangerous offense of the Tigers. Vargas is off to a very strong start to the season, going 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA over six outings.
Detroit has talent on the mound and at the plate and have to be kept from pulling away from the rest of the division early. The Tigers and Verlander are tough to beat even though the Royals have played him tough but it's tough to go against the Tigers at a decent price...
