The San Diego Padres host the Kansas City Royals in an interleague bout Monday night.
Kansas City had a shot to slow down visiting Detroit in their weekend set but instead found themselves on the wrong end of a sweep following Sunday's 9-4 defeat for their 7th loss in eleven contests. The Royals struggled on the mound in this series continued with Jason Vargas getting tagged for seven runs on eleven hits including a pair of long balls in five frames. That was too much for the offense to contend with on a seven hit attack that saw Norichika Aoki and Jarrod Dyson knock in two runs each. Yordano Ventura makes his 6th start of 2014 when he faces San Diego for the first time. Ventura has been outstanding the last two ties out with zero runs allowed on nine hits over 13 innings.

The Padres got a 4-3 win over Arizona Sunday at Petco Park to end a four game slide although San Diego continued to strugggle in the scoring department. SD has put the load of winning on the shoulders of their arms but they still need some consistency at the plate to be competitive. Starter Tyson Ross didn't get the win but kept his team in the game with all three runs allowed on seven hits over seven innings. The offense managed eight hits and a bases on ball with Rene Rivera knocking in a pair while the winning run was plated in the 9th on Yonder Alonso's grounder. San Diego sends left hander Eric Stults to the bump against visiting Kansas City in the series opener. Stults had problems in his last start with five runs plated on seven hits in 2.2 innings pitched.
Kansas City hasn't looked like the challenger in the American League Central they are supposed to be but the season is long. Both teams have some scoring issues so I'm looking at the pitching and favor Ventura...
