The San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates will play a rubber game on Wednesday afternoon.
The Giants had their six-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday in a 2-1 loss, but are still playing terrific baseball. The Giants have allowed two or less runs in six of their last seven games and three or less runs in 20 of their first 33 games this season. Offensively, Brandon Belt has cooled off with only one RBI in his last 10 games, but Buster Posey has 16 hits and seven RBI in his last 10 games. Getting the nod for the Giants will be Tim Lincecum, who is 2-1 with a 5.12 ERA and has 31 strikeouts in 31.2 innings. Lincecum is 2-3 with a 4.46 ERA in seven career starts against the Pirates.
USA TODAY Sports
The Pirates have won three of their last five games but are still a horrible 13-20 on the season. The lack of offense has killed the Pirates all season, but they have scored a combined 28 runs in their last five games. Andrew McCutchen has gotten on base in seven straight games and Pedro Alvarez has eight RBI in his last seven games. The Pirates pitching staff has also underachieved, including Gerrit Cole, who is 2-2 with a 3.69 ERA and has 32 strikeouts in 39 innings. Cole is 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA in one career start against the Giants.
The Giants are 4-0 in Lincecum's last 4 starts and 6-1 in Lincecum's last 7 starts as a road underdog. The Pirates are 4-1 in Cole's last 5 starts as a home favorite and 9-4 in Cole's last 13 starts.
Lincecum plus money? Sign me up. The Pirates are wildly inconsistent and have trouble scoring. I'll take the better pitcher for mor bang for my buck.
