The Detroit Tigers and the Houston Astros face off on Thursday as they close out their series in Detroit.
The Detroit Tigers are getting some early separation as the try and run away from the AL Central. On Wednesday Don Kelly had two hits and Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez each hit home runs as the Tigers scored three runs on five hits. Starting pitcher Rick Porcello allowed seven hits ad two runs while striking out five over 6.1 innings to get the win and go to 5-1 for the season and Joe Nathan earned his seventh save. The Houston Astros seem to be doing some positive things but they still have the worst record in baseball. On Wednesday Marwin Gonzalez had two hits and Dexter Fowler and Jason Castro had hits as the Astros scored two runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Brad Peacock allowed four hits and three runs while striking out four over 6.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 0-3 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Astros start Dallas Keuchel who took the loss in hos last start. For the season Keuchel has allowed 35 hits and 16 earned runs while striking out 33 over 36.1 innings for a 2-2 record and a 3.96 ERA.
Detroit is 8-0 in their last eight games, 5-1 in their last six home games, and 1-4 in Smyly’s last five starts. Houston is 14-42 in their last 56 games, 2-7 in game four of a series, and 4-10 in Keuchel’s last 14 starts. Houston is 3-14 in the last 17 meetings with the Tigers.
Houston fought the good fight and came up short on Wednesday but I look for them to bounce back and get a win here.
