The Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves will begin a three-game series on Friday night.
The Cubs have lost four of their last five games and enter this matchup with a 12-21 record. The Cubs pitching is actually pretty decent, but their struggles come on the offensive end where they’ve scored three or less runs in eight of their last 13 games. Anthony Rizzo leads the Cubs with seven homers and 18 RBI, and he’s actually homered in four of his last eight games. Just don’t count on much offensive production from anybody else. Taking the mound Friday is Jason Hammel, who is 4-1 with a 2.43 ERA and has 32 strikeouts in 40.2 innings. Hammel is 1-3 with a 6.39 ERA in six career starts against the Braves.

The Braves have lost eight of their last nine games and have quickly fallen out of first place in the NL East. Like the Cubs, the Braves have struggled mightily to score runs, producing three or less runs in nine of their last 10 games. Justin Upton leads the Braves with nine homeruns and 19 RBI, but that hasn’t helped the Braves get in the win column. Crazy enough, the Braves have the best team ERA in the majors at 2.77. Starting Friday is Julio Teheran, who is 2-2 with a 1.80 ERA and has 33 strikeouts in 50 innings. This will be Teheran’s third career start against the Cubs.
The Cubs are 6-20 in their last 26 road games and 7-19 in their last 26 games as a road underdog. The Braves are 5-1 in Teheran's last 6 starts and 10-4 in Teheran's last 14 starts as a favorite. The Cubs are 1-6 in the last 7 meetings against the Braves.
Not sure what oddmakers are thinking giving the Braves that much juice with the way they've been stinking it up lately. Are they the better team in this matchup? Sure. But you'd be crazy to bet on the Braves with their recent play. Hammel has pitched well this season and gives the Cubs a fighting chance between two teams that can't score.
Give me the Cubs for the juciy price.
