The Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals face off on Saturday at PNC Park for game two of their series in Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t had the start they had hoped for this season but they rallied on Friday getting the win against the Cardinals. Neil Walker had three hits including a home run, Jordy Mercer had three hits, and Ike Davis and Jose Tabata each had two hits as the Pirates scored six runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Francisco Liriiano allowed five hits and three runs while striking out five over 5.0 innings to not factor in the decision as Justin Wilson got the win and Mark Melancon earned the save. For Saturday’s game the Pirates start Edinson Volquez who has lost his last three stats. For the season Volquez has allowed 35 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 21 over 38.2 innings for a 1-3 record and a 4.19 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
The St. Louis Cardinals had the lead late on Friday in Pittsburgh but they were unable to hold on and they fell to the Pirates. Jhonny Peralta and Allen Craig each had two hits including a home run and Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday each added hits as the Cardinals scored four runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Michael Wacha allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out seven over 5.0 innings to not factor in the decision as Carlos Martinez blew the save and took the loss. For Saturday’s game St. Louis starts Lance Lynn who hasn’t won in his last three starts. For the season Lynn has allowed 36 hits and 16 earned runs while striking out 45 over 41 innings for a 4-1 record and a 3.51 ERA.
Pittsburgh is 6-2 in their last eight games, 6-2 in their last eight home games, and 1-4 in Volquez’s last five starts. St. Louis is 2-6 against the NL Central, 2-6 as a rod favorite, and 5-2 in Lynn’s last seven starts. St. Louis is 4-12 in their last 16 games in Pittsburgh.
The Cardinals still lack punch but I like their matchup on the mound enough to give them the pick here.
