The Oakland Athletics and Cleveland Indians will play game two of three on Saturday night.
The Athletics have won seven of their last eight games and are now 10 games above a .500 record and first place in the AL West. A big reason for the A’s success has come on the offensive side, as they’ve scored five or more runs in five of their last seven games and are 20-6 when scoring more than three runs this season. Josh Reddick had two homers and six RBI in Friday’s win, and Josh Donaldson has homered in three straight games. Scott Kazmir gets the start, and he’s 5-1 with a 2.28 ERA and has 42 strikeouts in 51.1 innings. Kazmir is 2-3 with a 5.17 ERA in nine career starts against the Indians.
USA TODAY Sports
The Indians have lost four of their last six games and are struggling with their pitching staff during this stretch. The Indians have allowed four or more runs in six straight games and are 8-20 this season when allowing three or more runs. Offensive production continues to be up-and-down for the Indians, but Yan Gomes has eight RBI in his last nine games and Nick Swisher one of his three homeruns on Friday. Josh Tomlin gets the nod, and he’s 2-0 with a 2.13 ERA and has six strikeouts in 12.2 innings. This will be Tomlin’s second career start against the Athletics.
The Athletics are 4-0 in Kazmir's last 4 road starts and 7-1 in Kazmir's last 8 starts as a favorite. The Indians are 10-2 in Tomlin's last 12 home starts vs. a team with a winning record and 5-2 in Tomlin's last 7 home starts.
The value is with the Indians in this spot. Tomlin has been money when pitching at home and and has been solid in his first two starts this season. Sure, Kazmir has also been great, but Cleveland is at home and plays well with Tomlin on the mound. I'll take my chances with the plus money.
