The struggling New York Mets look to even their series with the Washington Nationals Saturday.
The Mets were playing decent baseball to kick off the year but have been struggling lately with defeats in eight of eleven with the offense unable to get going. That rend continued in Friday's 5-2 loss at Washington. Starter Jonathan Niese suffered through a rare off night with all five runs scored on eight hits over four innings. The bats mustered seven hits and walked five times with Ruben Tejada and Eric Young driving in runs. The Mets send veteran Bartolo Colon to the mound for game two of their series at Washington. Colon hopes to rebound from a 9-7 loss to the Yankees with seven runs plated on eleven hits in 5.2 frames.

Washington has played .500 baseball the past few weeks but that is good enough to stay right on the heels of Atlanta for the top spot in the National League East. The Nationals picked up a game in the standings following their victory over the Mets in the series opener. It was a complete effort on the mound and at the plate with Tanner Roark allowing the two lone runs in five innngs with four relievers putting up zeros the rest of the way. The Nats pounded out eleven hits and walked three times with Tyler Moore leading the way with a pair of RBI's. Gio Gonzalez toes the rubber Saturday against National League East rival the Mets. Gonzalez suffered through his poorest effort of the year with seven runs allowed on nine hits in 4.1 innings.
The Mets are slumping and having problems scoring which has me looking at Washington for lack of a better choice...
