The Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Angels wrap up their four-game series Sunday afternoon in Angel Stadium.
The Rays are still trying to turn their season around by winning three of their last five games, but they remain six games below .500. A lot of this has to do with poor pitching, as the Rays have allowed six or more runs in five of their last nine games. The Rays currently have the 22nd worst ERA in the majors at 4.12. Offensively, Evan Longoria is hitting the ball well, but he has just one homerun this month. Taking the mound Sunday is David Price, who is 4-3 with a 4.02 ERA and has 70 strikeouts in 62.2 innings. Price is 4-3 with a 3.57 ERA in nine career starts against the Angels.
USA TODAY Sports
The Angels are final playing with some consistency, winning seven of their last nine games and positing themselves nicely in the AL West. The reason for the turnaround has been the Angels pitching, a unit that has allowed three or less runs in eight of their last 12 games. That’s a big turnaround from how the rotation was pitching earlier in the year. Offensively, Erick Aybar has 10 hits in as many games. Getting the nod is Matt Shoemaker, who is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA and has eight strikeouts in 11.2 innings. This will be Shoemaker’s first time pitching against the Rays in his career.
The Rays are 9-4 in Price's last 13 starts and 53-24 in Price's last 77 starts with 4 days of rest. The Angels are 6-13 in their last 19 games as an underdog and 22-7 in their last 29 vs. a team with a losing record. The Rays are 5-2 in Price's last 7 starts vs. Angels.
The Rays seem like the pick in this spot with Price on the mound, but there's just too much value getting plus money with the red hot Angels. The Angels continue to tear the cover off the ball, and their pitching has seemed to settle down a bit. I'll gladly ride the hot hand and get more bang for my buck.
