The Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians will play game two of three when they meet Tuesday night at Progressive Field.
The Tigers had their six-game winning streak snapped on Monday with a 5-4 loss to the Indians in the 10th inning. Still, the Tigers offense has been crazy consistent, scoring at least four runs in seven of their last nine games. With the loss, the Tigers are now 22-3 this season when scoring more than three runs. Miguel Cabrera has three straight games of three hits and Victor Martinez has a nine-game hitting streak going. The Tigers pitching has also been on point, including Justin Verlander, who is 5-2 with a 3.15 ERA and has 47 strikeouts in 60 innings. Verlander is 18-14 with a 4.28 ERA in 36 career starts against the Indians.
USA TODAY Sports
The Indians have lost six of their last nine games, but are just five games below a .500 record. As has been the case for much of the season, the Indians pitching staff has let them down in a big way, allowing four or more runs in nine straight games. The Indians ERA of 4.22 is the 24th worst in the majors. Offensively, it’s been a struggle for the Indians, but Michael Brantley has seven hits in his last five games and David Murphy has 12 hits in his last five. Taking the mound Tuesday is Trevor Bauer, who is 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA and has eight strikeouts in six innings. This will be Bauer’s first career game against the Tigers.
The Tigers are 5-0 in Verlander's last 5 road starts and 17-7 in Verlander's last 24 road starts vs. a team with a losing record. The Indians are 1-5 in their last 6 games as a home underdog and 7-2 in their last 9 vs. American League Central. The Tigers are 5-2 in Verlander's last 7 road starts vs. Indians.
Picking against the Tigers and Verlander at this price should be illegal. Take the Tigers as long as you think the price is fair.
