The Chicago Cubs continue their series with the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

The Cubs haven't had a whole lot to cheer about in 2014 and are destined to finish at the bottom of the National League Central. That doesn't mean they never play well because that's happening now with wins in four of after downing San Diego 5-1 on Thursday. Jake Arrieta picked up the win with the lone run scored in six innings with Carlos Villanueva finishing up the gem. Anthony Rizzo was the offensive star with a homer and two RBI's while four platers drove in runs and five scored. Edwin Jackson hopes to continue his string of solid outings when he faces San Diego in game two. Jackson is 1-1 in his last three with a 1.80 ERA and 0.95 WHIP over 20 innings.

San Diego will do well if they can finish th season at .500 although that wouldn't be enough to challenge in the National League West. The Padres are a team that need both their arms and bats on the same page to be successfull and that didn't happen in the series opener versus visiting Chicago. Starter Eric Stults struggled with all five runs scored on six hits through 4.2 innings of work. That proved to be too much for the offense and their seven hit one walk attack. The only run came in the form of Seth Smith's 6th long ball in the first that gave the Padres the lead. Left hander Robbie Erlin is scheduled to take the mound on Friday in his first ever appearance versus the Cubs. Erlin struggled in an 8-5 victory at Colorado with four runs plated on nine hits in five innings.

Given the way the Cubs are playing I think laying the chalk with San Diego is risky business. Of course backing the Cubs is the definition of risky...
