The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Washington Nationals face off on Saturday in game one of their series at PNC Park.
The Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t had the best start to the season but they have won the firs two games of their series against the Nationals after getting the win on Friday. Pedro Alvarez hit a home run, Ike Davis had two hits, and Neil Walker had a hit as the Pirates scored four runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Charlie Moron allowed five hits and a run while striking out for over 5.2 innings to get the win and go to 1-6 for the year and Jason Grilli earned his sixth save. For Saturday’s game the Pirates start Gerit Cole who has won two of his last three starts. For the season Cole has allowed 60 hits and 25 earned runs while striking out 53 over 58.2 innings for a 4-3 record and a 3.84 ERA.

The Washington Nationals simply didn’t take advantage of their chances on Friday as they fell to the Pirates. Denard Span had two hits and Jayson Wetth and Ian Desmond added hits as the Nationals scored three runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Jordan Zimmerman allowed seven hits and four runs while striking out four over 6.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 3-2 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Nationals start Stephen Strasburg who has a no decision and a loss in his last two starts. For the season Strasburg has allowed 63 hits and 23 earned runs while striking out 74 over 61.1 innings for a 3-3 record and a 3.38 ERA.
Pittsburgh is 7-2 in their last nine home games, 8-21 in game three of a series, and 11-5 in Cole’s last 16 starts. Washington is 3-9 against the NL Central, 2-8 in their last 10 road games, and 13-5 in Strasburg’s last 18 starts. Washington is 1-5 in the last six meetings of these two.
The Nationals out hit the Pirates on Friday but left their chances on the base paths but I look for them to have the edge here and get the win.
