The Los Angeles Angels and the Kansas City Royals face off on Sunday in Anaheim as thry close out their series.
The Los Angles Angels battled back on Sunday but they were unable to take advantage of opportunities as they fell to the Royals in extra innings. Mike Trout and Erick Aybar each had two hits and had home runs, David Freese had three hits, and Albert Pujols and Hank Conger had two hits each as the Angels scored four runs on 14 hits. Starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker allowed eight hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out six over 5.0 innings but didn’t factor in the decision as Joe Smith blew the save and Mike Morin took the loss. The Angels look to bounce back on Sunday as they start Garrett Richards who is coming off of a loss in his last start. For the season Richards has allowed 45 hits and 19 earned runs while striking out 55 over 59 innings for a 4-1 record and a 2.90 ERA.

The Kansas City Royals got back to .500 for the season as they outlasted the Angels on Saturday. Eric Hosmer had four hits, Lorenzo Cain had three hits, and Alex Gordon, Salvador Perez, and Norichika Aoki each had two hits as the Royals scored seven runs on 16 hits. Starting pitcher James Shields allowed nine hits and four runs while striking out four over 6.0 innings but got a no decision as Aaron Crow got the win to go to 2-1 on the season and Greg Holland earned his 14th save. For Sunday’s game the Royals stat Jason Vargas who was hit hard and took the loss in his last start. For the season Vargas has allowed 64 hits and 27 earned runs while striking out 46 over 64.2 innings for a 4-2 record and a 3.76 ERA.
Los Angeles is 4-0 following a loss, 8-3 as a favorite, and 11-5 in Richards’ last 16 home starts. Kansas City is 502 on the road against a right-handed starter, 3-9 as an underdog, and 4-1 in Vargas’s last five starts against a team with a winning record. Kansas City is 1-5 in the last six meetings with Los Angeles.
Originally I liked the Angels here but after digging a little deeper I like the chances of Vargas going deeper into this game than Richards and coming off of an extra innings game with a late finish into a day game it is well worth taking a shot at this price.
