The New York Mets battle the Arizona Diamondbacks in game two of their doubleheader on Sunday.
The Diamondbacks have an awful record which belies the fact they aren't a real bad team. Infact Arizona has enough talent to at least hang tough in a top heavy National League West although that might be out of the question now. The Snakes inexplicable slow start has set the tone for the time being and perhaps for 2014 unless they can go on the same type of run we saw from the Dodgers after the 2013 All Star break. Having said that and also saying this team has talent, I don't know if they have enough to dig themselves out of this hole unless the wins begin piling up soon. The Diamondbacks have called up Zeke Spruill to make his third career start versus the Mets in game two of their twin bill. Spruill faced the Mets in 2013 in a 9-5 defeat with five runs plated (four earned) in three frames.

I also think the Mets have some talent although not to the same degree as the Diamondbacks. The problem for them and any team not named the Nationals or Braves is the National League East is extremely unforgiving. New York has suffered their fair share of injuries and still have issues in that department with Matt Harvey and Dillon Gee among others robbing the team of much needed production. The issue for the Mets is they need all their weapons and need them to play well to be competitive and that doesn't bode well for this team going forward unless a few guys suddenly have 'career' type seasons. Daisuke Matsuzaka makes his first start of the year in the second game of the doubleheader. Matsuzaka has thrown 21 innings out of the pen and has gone 1-0 with a 2.14 ERA with 24 K's and 17 BB.
I don't know what we can expect from Spruill and by the same token I don't know what we'll see from Matsuzaka except his control can be alarmingly bad. I'll back the Mets but you should probably look elsewhere...
