The Washington Nationals and Pittsburgh Pirates conclude their series at PNC Park on Sunday.
I gave Washington a pass last season as they couldn't repeat as National League East champions but after watching this team stumble over and over again despite plenty of talent on the roster. The Nats lost a lead and the game in a 3-2 defeat at Pittsburgh on Saturday despite a solid effort on the mound by Stephen Strasburg who allowed three runs in seven innings to take the loss. That wasn't a winning performance because the Nats managed just five hits with Ian Desmond going deep and Wilson Ramos doubling in another. The Nationals turn to Doug Fister for his 4th start of the 2014 campaign. Fister has been outstanding the last two times out with combined times out on eleven hits in 13 frames while recording eleven K's.

The Pirates are trying to emerge from an early season slumber and right now the signs are positive with Saturday's win being number four in a row and 5th in 6th contests. The work on the mound has been the key in this stretch and was once again Saturday. Gerrit Cole gave the Buccos a boost with both runs plated through six innings with three relievers keeping Washington off the scoreboard. The Pirates bats did just enough damage with Neil Walker going solo with Josh Harrison and Jose Tabata driving in runs. Left hander Francisco Liriano takes the ball against visiting Washington looking for win number one on the season. Liriano has struggled to an 0-4 record and 4.6 ERA in ten starts.
Fister has only three starts under his belt so it's difficult to get a grasp on him yet although Liriano is easy to figure out because he has struggled. I have a sneaky suspicion the Pirates pull this out but pulling the trigger with Liriano seems dumb...
